== (3) It's Been a Pleasure, LA - note from Michelle Yuen C'02===========================
My, my.. dear Los Angeles & beyond (to the visiting guests we've had over the years).

It has been my pleasure and honor to support UPAAN here in Los Angeles the last handful of years. Thank you to those who have come out to the various events and that I've had to pleasure to meet. From the mixers to beach volleyball, dim sum traditions to intercollegiate collaborations, I've had tons of fun! Each time I leave a UPAAN event, I'm energized and inspired by the folks I meet. Seriously. What can I say, I love my Penn family.  :)

Some of you may know how I have talked about moving back east for years. Well, I have finally made it to NYC now, but LA shall always be home. And regardless, I'll probably see you at another UPAAN function soon!

Best to all in 2012.
cheers,
michelle yuen, C'02

##2) Jun Ishidoya '99 Offering Free Counseling.##

Dear UPAAN-NYC Members,

To kick off the new year, my group private practice would like to offer our services. Mental Health Counseling & Marriage and Family Therapy of New York is a collective of therapists in New York who work from a warm, collaborative framework. We also offer non-mental health services such as school, college, and career counseling.

As a Penn alumna in NYC, I understand that you may be faced with many different pressures. Oftentimes, Asian-Americans don't know who to speak to regarding their issues or have a stigma against seeking help. I hope that I can offer a comfortable place to talk and brainstorm solutions. I encourage those who have never sought counseling to experience it firsthand and those who want to jump back in or switch to someone else to change your current situation. To learn more about me, my bio can be accessed at: http://www.mytherapist.info/jun-ishidoya/.

Here are some questions to ponder:

Does living in New York have you feeling out of control? Do you have racing thoughts, worry, anxiety, depression, or anger?

Are you unhappy with the state of your relationships with loved ones, colleagues or friends?

Are you unhappy with the direction your life is going? This may include feeling stuck in your job or career situation or that your work is unfulfilling.

Do you feel like the person you are on the inside is not the same person you are to those around you? This may include questioning cultural identity, sexual identity, gender identity, self-esteem, etc.

I will be available for free consultations 30 minutes one-on-one by appointment only at the Union Square office. To take advantage, you can contact me directly until the end of February.

Who: Jun Ishidoya at Mental Health Counseling & Marriage and Family Therapy of New York
What: 30 minutes of counseling at no cost
Where: 841 Broadway, Suite 302, NY NY 10003
When: Thru end of February
How: Make appointments by contacting Jun at jun@mytherapist.info or 212.343.7008 ext 3 and mention UPAAN.

For more info: www.mytherapist.info, http://www.mytherapist.info/jun-ishidoya/

Looking forward to talking to you!

***Official UPAAN News***

EAST COAST ASIAN AMERICAN STUDENT UNION CONFERENCE AT UPENN

On behalf of the East Coast Asian American Student Union (ECAASU) Conference Board, I would like to humbly request your support for the 33rd annual conference, which will be held from March 4-6th at the University of Pennsylvania. Kusum Soin highly recommended you for your strong commitment to supporting PAACH, and we need your help now.

With nearly 1,400 attendees expected to attend next spring from nearly 130 universities across the country, ECAASU stands as the largest and longest running ethnic-interest collegiate conference in the nation. Since its humble beginnings at Princeton University in 1978, ECAASU has proudly expanded the conference experience to over six times its original size, adding social networking and professional career opportunities to its repertoire of educational workshops, keynote speeches, and showcase entertainment.

Our theme this year is “Behind These Eyes : Impression . Introspection . Innovation”. The focus of our theme is to encourage a deeper exploration of the origins behind the elements that compose the Asian American identity, both in a collective and an individual setting. Too often do people walk through life without an understanding and appreciation for the profound history behind the relationships of the everyday world. In this particular age, when the overflow of information threatens to let us forget just what makes us who we are, we find it all the more important to re-examine ourselves and the reality around us in order to rediscover the significance and beauty behind our eyes.

This year, we hope to invite some of the most prominent Asian American politicians, academics, and performers. So far we have invited the following:

·         Gary Locke, Secretary of Commerce
·         Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo
·         Quest Crew, season 3 winner from America’s Best Dance Crew
·         John Cho and Kal Penn, actors from Harold and Kumar
·         Helen Zia, writer and activist
·         Maulik Pancholy, actor from 30 Rock and Weeds
·         David Choi, YouTube phenomenon

As a self-perpetuating, student-run conference, it’s been difficult to secure corporate sponsorship given the current economic situation. Additionally, as a 501(c)(3) conference, we rely on the support of donors like you in order to ensure that ECAASU 2010 will be as great as it can be. By supporting ECAASU, you can help make a difference in issues that are important to you as an Asian American. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated, and you will be recognized in our program book. For individuals, there are three levels of sponsorship:

Friend: $10-99
Associate: $100-499
Sponsor: $500+

To make your tax-deductible donation, please send a check written out to “Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania” with “ECAASU 2010 Donation” in the memo to:

If you prefer to donate by credit card, please go to PAACH’s website (
www.vpul.upenn.edu/paach), click “Donate” and find the PAACH Gift Fund under University Life. Please follow up with an email to donations@ecaasu2010.org with your name and gift amount and we will confirm that your gift has been forwarded to ECAASU 2010, as our account is administered by PAACH.

If you choose to donate, please check whether your employer will match your donations. This is an extremely simple and effective way to double or triple your support for ECAASU 2010. For more information, please visit our website (www.ecaasu2010.org) and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions at donations@ecaasu2010.org or our Finance Team at 609-233-5114.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and contribution.

Sincerely,

Carlin Yuen

Thank Yous & Shout-Outs from Michelle Yuen, UPAAN-LA

Dear UPAAN-LAers & friends,

Thank you so much to those who joined us Friday night at Pink Taco in Century City. It was REALLY awesome for me to hang with the old friends and meet new ones. Just the perfect dose of what I needed.

A BIG THANK YOU to Wesley Nakamura (C'06), my (now retired) partner in crime here on the UPAAN-LA board. It has been a wonderful time working with you the last 3 years. It was meant-to-be that o'glorious day we met at PAACH during your senior year... while you were napping on that couch.  ;)  Best of luck with your endeavors the next few years, Mr. Cycling Extraordinaire. (Please be our cameraman at future UPAAN-LA events!)

I would also like to take this opportunity to formally welcome Gloria Lee (C'97, GPU'98, WG'07) to UPAAN-LA as one of our Los Angeles representatives. If you didn't get a chance to meet her last night, here are the top 3 reasons why she rocks:

(1) Without her presence and student leadership during her undergraduate tenure, my experience (and anyone around my time and behind me) at Penn would have been vastly different. She is one of the founders of APSC (Penn's Asian Pacific Student Coalition). As an alum, she is one of the OG trailblazers that founded UPAAN and established this alumni group as officially-recognized by the university's alumni office;

(2) Her leadership here in Los Angeles is an inspiration. She is organized, ambitious, and gets things done. Not only is she busy with her day job at Fox Cable Networks devising clever strategies to sell more cable content, she still manages to find the time to organize mixers for *several* different groups, run half marathons, and be a friend to others;

and last but not least..

(3) My friends ...she has THREE (3) Penn degrees.

Now, moving forward, please save-the-date for our next Quarterly Mixer on Saturday, February 6, 2010. It will be our 3rd Annual Lunar New Year Dim Sum Brunch celebration. Mark your calendars.

The UPAAN-LA Quarterly Mixer Kickoff award for "Favorite Traveler in the Los Angeles Basin" goes to Dong Soo Lee (W'96) and his wife, Jisun Han, for driving all the way from Carlsbad (near San Diego) to attend our event. Thank you Dong Soo for your enthusiastic presence and energy!

Thank you all again & look forward to seeing you next.
Cheers,
michelle

Celebrating 25 Years of the Greenfield Intercultural Center

Dear Alumni,

Please join fellow Penn alumni and Greenfield Intercultural Center Director Valerie de Cruz in celebrating the 25th Anniversary of one of the University of Pennsylvania's most beloved resource centers:  the University of Pennsylvania’s Greenfield Intercultural Center (GIC).  For one day, in San Francisco, alumni from around the Bay Area are coming together to celebrate the GIC, and learn about programs and recent developments at the center.

We invite you to come meet Penn alums who were affiliated with the GIC during their time at Penn, as well as those who have been interested in the programs that the GIC has to offer; programs such as Alliance and Understanding, PACE, and the Franklin Community House.  The GIC also directly supports over 30 student organizations, including the United Minorities Council (UMC) and all of its constituent groups.  These many organizations call the GIC "home."  Under the office of the Vice Provost of University Life, the GIC staff and students play an integral part in the Penn administrative community.  Since leaving Penn, many Penn students associated with the GIC have moved on to have an incredible impact in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Enjoy delicious BBQ and a great view of the Bay, while you mingle with alumni and GIC staff and, and share stories that span a quarter century!
