Dr. Roberto Mariano

Dr. Roberto Mariano

Professor Emeritus, University of Pennsylvania

Professor Emeritus Roberto S. Mariano was the Founding Dean of the School of Economics of Singapore Management University. Professor Mariano’s work was also important to the establishment of the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics, which is one of SMU’s key interdisciplinary research centres.

Professor Mariano has also been with the Economics faculty of the University of Pennsylvania since 1971 and he has held visiting positions in various academic institutions in the US, Europe and Asia. He has authored numerous research papers and books on econometric methodology and applications and has served on the editorial board of several international professional journals in economics and statistics. He was the principal investigator in research projects funded by the United Nations, US National Science Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the US Department of Commerce and the US Department of Agriculture. With a focus on econometric modeling for forecasting and policy analysis, he has been a consultant to various central banks, government ministries, and stock exchanges in Asia as well as private companies in Asia and the US.

Iqram Magdon-Ismail (ENG’06) is co-founder of Venmo, a service that provides a fun and easy way for users to charge and pay friends and bypass the need for cash or checks.  Iqram loves product design and focuses on the user experience at Venmo.

Prior to starting Venmo (with his freshman year roommate at Penn), Iqram worked for Ticketleap, an online ticket sales and event marketing company.  He graduated in 2006 with a degree in Computer Science.

Joyce Meng

Co-Founder & CEO, Givology

Joyce Meng is the co-founder and CEO of Givology (www.givology.org), an online giving marketplace for education that connects donors to grassroots education causes around the world. As a 100% volunteer-run organization, Givology has helped over 3,000 students globally through 50 grassroots partnerships in 28 countries, with over 6,000 global supporters and 18 regional chapters.

As her day job, Joyce is an energy investor at MSD Capital, which she joined in February 2012 after working as an industrials analyst at Goldman Sachs Investment Partners. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 as a joint-degree Huntsman student. As a Rhodes Scholar, Joyce graduated with distinction from Oxford University with a MSc in Financial Economics and a MSc in Economics for Development, receiving the Arthur Lewis Prize. She enjoys playing ice hockey, reading, and social entrepreneurship.

Executive Director, Apex for Youth

Michael Lee is Executive Director of Apex for Youth, a nonprofit that recruits working professional volunteers to be positive role models for underserved youth from low income Asian and immigrant families in NYC.  Prior to joining Apex, Michael served as the Director of Development at the Committee of 100, an organization of Chinese American leaders that addresses issues concerning Asian Americans and U.S.-China Relations.

A native New Yorker, Michael received an M.S. in Fundraising and Philanthropy from New York University and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in East Asian Studies. He led the University of Pennsylvania Asian Alumni Network (UPAAN) in New York City from 2006-2011 and teaches martial arts and lion dance at Norman Chin’s Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu School in Chinatown.
