UPAAN Executive Committee Position Descriptions
President. - Calvin Chen, CAS/WH '97 - The President is the primary public spokesperson for UPAAN, responsible for the coordination of the Executive Committee, the Board, and the members. The President also creates any ad hoc committees necessary to carry out UPAAN’s day-to-day activities.Vice President. - Laura Lin, SEAS '02 - The Vice President manages the internal affairs of UPAAN and assists the President in general Executive Committee tasks. In the absence of the President, the Vice President represents the Executive Committee and UPAAN. The Vice President is also responsible for membership recruitment and retention.
Secretary/Treasurer. The Secretary/Treasurer keeps accurate records of all financial accounts controlled, owned, or attributable to UPAAN and prepares and/or supervises the preparation of an annual financial report. The Secretary/Treasurer is also responsible for collecting and recording of membership dues (if applicable) and for the ongoing budgeting of UPAAN. The Secretary/Treasurer maintains an accurate list of members, consisting persons who are current in the payment of membership dues and meet all other membership criteria. The Secretary/Treasurer ensures that minutes of all meetings are taken, preserved, and made available for inspection to the membership, and certifies the presence of a quorum at any meeting, receive and tabulate votes, announces the results of all votes and elections, and certifies the validity of proxies. In the event the Secretary/Treasurer is a candidate in the election, the President shall appoint another Board member to oversee the elections process.
Publicity/Communications Committee Chair: - Michael Lee, CAS '02 - The Publicity/Communications Committee Chair provides effective and timely communications about UPAAN national strategic initiatives and regional events and initiates, maintains and facilitates communication between all board members and the University, other organizations, alumni, students, etc. The Publicity/Communications Committee Chair also works with other board members to advertise and publicize UPAAN events and programs.
Fundraising/Development Committee Chair: The Development Committee Chair develops and cultivates an international network of Asian Pacific Islander alumni from the University of Pennsylvania. The Fundraising/Development Committee Chair also provides support to regional leads in planning programs and special events focused on building and cultivating UPAAN membership. These programs/events include:
- Alumni receptions
- Professional networking
- Fundraising events
Student/University Affairs Committee Chair: Gizelle Gopez, CAS'05 - The Student/University Affairs Committee Chair supports the academic and career development of Asian and Pacific Islander students at the University and facilitates the exchange of ideas and information between Asian Pacific Islander alumni, students and the University. Potential activities include:
- Mentoring programs
- Scholarship drives
- Career development
- Maintain relations with Alumni Relations staff
- Participate on Diversity Alliance Steering Committee
Technology Coordinator: Eric Chen, SEAS '02 - The Technology Coordinator is responsible for the information and technological infrastructure of UPAAN, including the UPAAN webpage (www.upaan.org), and assists all other board members in technology-related tasks.
